HELP YOURSELF

Growing up in a Black household, one of the most awesome two-word phrases you can hear is “help yourself”. Even in a home with modest means like the one I grew up in, there was always more than enough love and whatever was being shared, from food to the little amenities that we had. The intent was to let visitors to our home know that they were to feel free and without restraint. They could freely take or serve themselves with food or drink without having to ask for permission or wait to be served.
